How to Use Visuals to Drive More Traffic to Your Site

We’ve all heard the old saying that a picture is worth a thousand words. Images are the quickest, most effective way to grab attention and communicate a message about your brand.

The best visuals immediately tell us what a brand or business is about. It’s also true that most of us love visual content – it’s just the way our brains are wired. It’s easy to take in and understand and, beyond that, humans are primed to respond to visual stimulus. It’s no surprise that brands using lots of striking visual content also tend to do best in the search results, attract more visitors and make more sales.

Use Infographics to Deliver Results

Infographics are one of the most popular forms of visual content online. You’ve probably seen at least one or two this month already. The reason they’re so prolific is that they’re incredibly effective. They condense lots of facts, complicated data or statistics into a much more digestible format. They’re also more colourful and easier to look at than big rows of data or pages and pages of text.

That’s not to say you can’t include lots of information in an infographic – you can but in a way that’s easier and quicker to digest than tonnes of text. Because infographics are so engaging, they are great tools for link building and driving more traffic to your site. In fact, infographics can increase web traffic by as much as 12-percent.

Always Use a Featured Image

When you’re putting together written content, the golden rule is to always team it with a featured image. If your content is text heavy with minimal visual elements, the featured image takes on even greater importance. This is what captures the attention of your audience and fosters interest in what comes after. As such, the featured image should always be relevant, original and engaging.

If you’re planning to promote your content on social media (you absolutely should!) the featured image is even more important. It needs to really stand out within a feed and encourage the viewer to take the plunge and click through.

Video is Hugely Important

If there’s one stat that may convince you to invest in video content it’s this: 95-percent of viewers retain the message of a video, compared to just 10-percent when reading text. Additionally, four times as many consumers prefer to watch a video about a product than read about it.

This makes perfect sense when you consider that the majority of us now use our smartphones to go online than traditional desktop computers. Mobile devices have a small screen and they’re often on the move. That means video content is the perfect, distilled way to consume content and a much more compelling format than a page of text requiring endless scrolling.
